“Best Companies to Work For” Essay

Immediately after I was handed my college diploma in 2011, the panic set it. Like most graduates, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. So, like most people who don’t know what to do with their lives, I moved to Europe. For six months I worked for a student travel company, spending my weekdays marketing and weekends traveling. When I returned to the states, I thought doomsday had arrived: it was time to get a job. A real profession. A pencil-pushing, cubicle-farm, depression-inevitable career.

It wasn’t long before that dream life almost came to fruition, in the form of a job offer as a marketing assistant in Boston. I didn’t accept the position right away because the offer came minutes before a scheduled phone interview with the IAPP—a company I hadn’t heard of before I stumbled upon their job opening online. One of the first questions my interviewer asked was if I like dogs, “because the IAPP has a dog-friendly office.” After a 15-minute phone conversation, I was hooked. Seconds after hanging up the phone, I respectfully declined the offer in Boston. I didn’t know if I would get the position at the IAPP, but I didn’t want anything else. Luckily, after a couple more interviews at the IAPP headquarters in Portsmouth, I was offered the job. It was a no-brainer.

I was blown away by my coworkers’ hospitality when I first joined the staff. Here I am, more than a year later, and the camaraderie has not faltered. Because the people who work at the IAPP are not just employees: we are mothers, husbands, musicians, dog lovers, athletes, movie junkies, beer connoisseurs, travelers and, above all, friends. We work together to accomplish goals not just out of duty to the organization, but to each other.

While the culture is a truly unique and central feature, it’s not the only reason the IAPP is a special place to work. As the online content coordinator, my job primarily involves maintaining our web content. However, simply by expressing the interest, I’ve had the opportunity to draft content, design graphics, help with our social media efforts and more. If there’s something you want to do or learn, you’re given that chance. The IAPP not only encourages professional development, they foster it.

I learn something new here every day—from the latest European privacy law, to the proper Ping-Pong form, to the best banana bread recipe. Many of my friends have the 60-hours-a-week, soul-sucking corporate grind that I thought I was destined for. When I talk about my job, they all say the same thing: “Are they hiring?”

Because they know, as do I, that I work at the best company in New Hampshire.

What’s on in Florence

November 7, 2011

Come Hungary, Leave Happy

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by.”

Robert Frost

There’s something undeniably thrilling about taking the road less traveled. Adventuring off the beaten path forces you to not only learn about a new destination, but about yourself. Discovery is fueled by self-motivated risk, and it’s that risk that motivates us to travel.

So where do we go for a fusion of history, culture, and adventure? We take IHOP’s advice: Come Hungary, leave happy.

The capital of Hungary and the ‘Paris of the East,’ Budapest is a beautiful city that lies on the Danube River. Its historical charm comes from a mixture of its communist past and western capitalist present, visible through medieval and modern architecture.

But what’s beneath the city is just as captivating. More than 200 caves wind through the underbelly of the Budapest, attracting tourists to exciting cave tours.

These caves were created by the same springs that now supply the city’s famous thermal baths, a relaxing treat after a day of exploration.

With the charm and splendor of Paris at cheap, Eastern European prices, Budapest is a destination you don’t want to miss.

Safe travels!

See you on the bus,

Balmer’s Herberge

If you’ve ever visited Interlaken, Switzerland, chances are you’ve stayed, eaten, or partied at Balmer’s Herberge. This 4-season holiday resort nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps is the first and oldest private hostel in Switzerland. With a quality accommodation, an outdoor Biergarten, Interlaken’s hottest nightclub, and now 7-person Jacuzzi, it’s no mystery why Balmer’s has been consistently voted one of Europe’s top ten hostels.

Since Frida and Adolf Balmer opened the establishment as a tourist house in 1907, Balmer’s has remained a family business. In the 1970s their son Erich transformed the tourist house into a private hostel, and its popularity was evident with the rapid growth from 50 to 350 beds.

Today Balmer’s is owned and managed by Erich’s daughters, Fabienne and Carmen, who continue to foster the friendly atmosphere that attracts travelers from all over the world.  Bus2alps is proud to be partnered with an establishment that shares our commitment to providing the best experience for travelers. We’ve made countless memories at Balmer’s Herberge, and look forward to many more to come!

Whats on in B2A World

Record-Breaking Study Break Sale!

Last week our Study Break Sale became the biggest giveaway yet, with thousands of students dropping their books and flooding the Bus2alps website to snag discounted seats. The amount of traffic to the site overloaded the server, causing a temporary crash (Social Network flashback, anyone?).

record

As in most traffic jams, there were those who were frustrated with the process and those who enjoyed the ride. We were the latter, overwhelmed by all of the excitement and enthusiasm from all of our customers who were ready and armed with their fingers on the refresh buttons to get huge discounts on their favorite trips.

Winter Wonderland

Although not everyone landed a discounted seat last week, the excitement of the sale alone motivated many students to hop on our bus. Many students are ready to kick the cold-weather blues this winter with a new adventure. Gather your university crew in the USA and hit the slopes with us at Killington and Mont Tremblant for 5 days of shredding and partying!

Want more extreme thrills? Be the first of your friends to explore the caves of Budapest, ride camels in Morocco, or skydive over the Swiss Alps in Interlaken. Don’t get cold feet – the memories you’ll make from discovering a new destination will make this winter one to remember!
